New data from BitBo shows there are just 106 million Bitcoin owners globally. What the 106 Million Figure MeansBitcoin Adoption Has Room to Grow

  • Only 106 million people currently own Bitcoin.
  • Data comes from BitBo’s latest global estimates.
  • Bitcoin adoption still has major room for growth.

Bitcoin has made headlines for over a decade, but according to BitBo’s latest data, only 106 million people globally own Bitcoin. While that may seem like a large number, it represents just a small fraction of the world’s population—just over 1%.

For a technology often compared to the internet in terms of impact, this figure highlights how early it still is in Bitcoin’s adoption curve. In comparison, over 5 billion people are active internet users today, showing how much further Bitcoin could grow as an asset and protocol.

What the 106 Million Figure Means

The number, reported by BitBo, is based on estimates using wallet activity, exchange data, and on-chain analytics. It’s important to note that this figure doesn’t represent the number of Bitcoin wallets, which are far higher, but rather individual owners.

This also suggests many people own more than one wallet, while some wallets belong to institutions, exchanges, or custodians holding BTC for others. Still, 106 million is a significant milestone for any financial asset.

Bitcoin Adoption Has Room to Grow

Despite its popularity in media and markets, Bitcoin adoption is still relatively low. For example, the number of Ethereum or Solana users has grown in recent years, but even combined, crypto ownership doesn’t come close to traditional finance adoption metrics.

With growing interest from institutional investors, global macro uncertainty, and increasing development on Bitcoin’s layer-2 solutions, the number of Bitcoin owners could see strong growth in the coming years.
