Vitalik calls for the Ethereum base layer to "ossify", urging innovation to shift to the L2 ecosystem
ChainCatcher news, according to DLNews,Vitalik Buterin stated at the Devconnect conference in Buenos Aires that the Ethereum base layer should gradually "ossify," locking in core functionalities to prevent the introduction of vulnerabilities.
"More ossification over time is beneficial for Ethereum, and our current unexpected situations have been greatly reduced," Vitalik told an audience of over 500 people. This marks a shift for Ethereum from emphasizing flexibility to pursuing stability. For a network that protects hundreds of billions of dollars in value, being 'boring' may be an advantage rather than a flaw.
Vitalik emphasized that ossification does not mean a complete freeze: the consensus layer can be locked while the EVM remains flexible, or vice versa. The key is to shift innovation from the base layer to Layer 2, wallets, and privacy tools in the surrounding ecosystem. "Shifting attention from L1 to the peripheral ecosystem is healthy."
He acknowledged that the early 'spirit of exploration' has faded with the proliferation of meme coins and institutional participation, criticizing the 'fast follower' mentality for harming imagination.
