OpenAI has hinted at a range of new features coming soon to its popular AI video app, Sora, which quickly climbed to the top of the App Store charts following its late September debut. Still holding the number one spot in both the U.S. and Canada, Sora will soon add video editing capabilities, let users create character “cameos” featuring pets or objects, enhance its social functions, and more. The company also confirmed that the Android version is “actually coming soon.”

Sora’s head, Bill Peebles, shared the news on X, noting that the new creative tools will roll out in the coming days. Among them is a feature that allows users to turn pets and other items—such as a “favorite stuffed toy or nearly anything else”—into cameos.

sora roadmap update: in the spirit of building this app openly, here's what we're landing soon.

first, more creation tools. character cameos are coming in the next few days: you'll be able to cameo your dog, guinea pig, favorite stuffed toy, and pretty much anything else you… pic.twitter.com/GX7CJXWRcZ

A “cameo” in Sora refers to a feature where users can generate AI versions of themselves by submitting a recorded video as a reference. These AI cameos can then be shared, allowing friends and others to create videos featuring your digital persona.

“We anticipate users will create a wide variety of unique cameos with this update. To help people discover them, we’re revamping the generation interface to highlight the most popular cameos in real time,” Peebles posted on X.

He also mentioned that the app will soon support basic video editing, starting with the ability to combine several clips. Additional editing tools will be introduced over time. The team is also working on a refreshed social experience, which will provide new ways to interact with Sora alongside friends, such as dedicated channels for universities, companies, sports teams, and more.

OpenAI is also aiming to ease the strict content moderation that some users have found excessive, while working to boost the app’s overall performance.

Although Sora is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, OpenAI has not yet announced an official release date. Peebles stated it should be available “soon,” but did not provide further specifics.

According to third-party data from Appfigures, Sora has been downloaded about 2 million times since its launch less than a month ago. This is especially notable since the app is still invite-only and has only launched in the U.S. and Canada.
