Solana Blockchain Gets Faster with Alpenglow Update with SIP SIMD-0337
- Accelerated block production with Block Marking technology
- IBRL latency reduced by approximately 7,5%
- Safer Leader Transition with BlockHeader and UpdateParent
The Solana network announced the implementation of SIP SIMD-0337 within the Alpenglow upgrade, which significantly improves the performance of its blockchain. The new system introduces the Block Marking feature, capable of reducing block production time by approximately 120 milliseconds.
This innovation improves Instant Block Replay Latency (IBRL) by approximately 7,5%, while also making throughput more reliable—a breakthrough that reinforces Solana's status as one of the fastest networks in the cryptocurrency market.
The main feature, called Fast Leader Handover, solves a long-standing challenge in blockchains: transitions between network leaders. In some situations, a malicious leader can trick the next leader into creating invalid blocks, resulting in forks. With the update, new leaders can start producing blocks instantly, without having to wait for previous confirmations, ensuring continuity even in times of instability.

Two components are fundamental to this structure. The BlockHeader identifies the parent block, while UpdateParent allows switching to a new parent block if a previous leader has acted inappropriately. This combination keeps the network efficient and secure, ensuring high processing throughput.
In addition to improving stability, the new system benefits dApp developers, DeFi protocols, and projects that rely on low latency and high transaction capacity. Solana continues to enhance its ecosystem to meet the performance and security demands of an increasingly competitive market.
