Tesla reportedly disbands Dojo supercomputer team, plans to rely on external partners
According to sources cited by Jinse Finance, Tesla (TSLA.O) is disbanding its Dojo supercomputer team, with project leader Peter Bannon set to leave and Elon Musk having ordered the termination of the R&D initiative. This marks the end of Tesla’s significant efforts in developing its own autonomous driving chips. Insiders report that around 20 team members have recently joined the newly established DensityAI, while the remaining staff will be reassigned to other data center and computing-related projects. Tesla reportedly plans to rely more heavily on external technology partners in the future, including computing power provided by Nvidia and AMD, as well as chip manufacturing services from Samsung Electronics. The Dojo project, which had been in preparation for years, was once considered the core of Tesla’s multi-billion-dollar AI strategy. Dojo was Tesla’s self-designed supercomputing system, used to train machine learning models supporting its autonomous driving, FSD, and Optimus robot initiatives.
