Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat: A Decentralized, Offline Messaging Platform

Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat: A Decentralized, Offline Messaging Platform

2025/07/07 22:42
By:

Jack Dorsey , co-founder of Twitter and prominent Bitcoin advocate, has unveiled Bitchat, a new decentralized messaging protocol designed to operate without internet access.

Launched recently in beta, Bitchat leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks. This technology enables devices to exchange messages with each other, creating a larger network without requiring internet access, thereby allowing for secure, peer-to-peer communication in areas with limited or no connectivity.

and here's an ugly whitepaper describing protocol:

How It Works

Bitchat’s key innovation is its ability to create self-organizing mesh networks from nearby devices. Each device acts as both client and server, allowing messages to hop across multiple nodes and extend communication well beyond Bluetooth’s typical 30-meter range.

Because it doesn’t rely on the internet, SIM cards, or cloud servers, Bitchat is built to withstand network outages, censorship, and government surveillance.

The platform supports end-to-end encryption to keep conversations private. Messages are stored temporarily on devices unless deliberately forwarded, reinforcing its commitment to privacy and censorship resistance. Users can also join room-based chats organized by hashtags, with optional password protection for secure group conversations.

Given Bluetooth’s limited bandwidth, larger messages are broken into smaller chunks to maintain efficient transmission. The development roadmap hints at future WiFi support to boost range and speed, enhancing Bitchat’s practical use.

Real-World Use Cases

Bitchat is designed for scenarios where reliable internet is unavailable or compromised, including protests, disaster zones, remote conferences, and areas under strict digital surveillance.

By enabling direct device-to-device messaging, Bitchat keeps people connected even during power outages or heavy network congestion.

This launch aligns with the growing trend of decentralized technologies focused on digital sovereignty. As a long-time Bitcoin proponent, Dorsey’s Bitchat furthers his vision of empowering individuals with tools that bypass centralized control and protect privacy.

Meanwhile, Dorsey’s company Block Inc. is pushing Bitcoin adoption forward, with plans to roll out Bitcoin payments via Square’s point-of-sale system using the Lightning Network by late 2025.

On the Flipside

  • For Bitchat to function effectively, devices need to be within close range of one another. If there aren’t enough users nearby or if the distances between devices are too great, message delivery and network reliability can suffer.
  • The success of new communication platforms often depends on user adoption and ease of use.

Why This Matters

Bitchat represents a meaningful step forward in offline, peer-to-peer communication, aligned with the ethos of web3 and crypto communities that prioritize censorship resistance, privacy, and decentralization.

People Also Ask:

How does Bitchat work without the internet?

Bitchat leverages BLE mesh technology, enabling messages to hop between nearby devices and extend communication beyond the typical Bluetooth range. This creates a local, self-organizing mesh network that doesn’t depend on the internet, SIM cards, or cloud servers.

Is Bitchat secure?

Yes, Bitchat supports end-to-end encryption, ensuring that messages remain private and confidential. Messages are only stored temporarily on devices unless forwarded intentionally.

How is Bitchat different from other messaging apps?

Unlike traditional apps that rely on internet and central servers, Bitchat operates offline, uses peer-to-peer connections, and does not require a SIM card or mobile data, making it more resilient to censorship and surveillance.
