According to Ian De Bode, Ondo’s chief strategy officer, the capital will be channeled into both equity stakes and tokens for RWA-related projects. The move marks another step for Ondo to expand its presence in the tokenized asset space, following the launch of a platform focused on on-chain exposure to assets such as US stocks, bonds and ETFs.
With this move, the company aims to offer real asset trading with 24/XNUMX availability, using blockchain technology to overcome the limitations of the traditional market. “Fundamentally, at some point, the question will be ‘why would I hold my assets on-chain rather than off-chain in a brokerage account?’” De Bode said in an interview.
The idea of facilitating the trading of tokenized stocks — including those of private companies — has been gaining traction. Robinhood recently announced that its users in the European Union will be able to trade tokens tied to the valuations of companies like OpenAI and SpaceX. Following the announcement, OpenAI clarified that it has no involvement with the initiative, noting that the tokens are derivatives, not directly tokenized stocks.
In addition to Ondo and Pantera, other companies have also been exploring the tokenized RWA market. Names such as Injective, Plume Network, Republic and Backed are among those developing solutions aimed at this sector. Exchanges such as Coinbase and Kraken have already shown interest in making tokenized shares of large companies, such as Tesla and Apple, available to their users.
The billion-dollar investment planned by Ondo and Pantera is yet another indication that real-world assets are set to occupy an increasingly larger share of the cryptocurrency market.
