Ethereum developer proposes six-second slot times

Ethereum developer proposes six-second slot times

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) core developer Barnabé Monnot has proposed halving the network’s slot time from 12 seconds to six seconds, effectively doubling the block production rate.

The proposal, known as Ethereum Improvement Proposal 7782 (EIP-7782), aims to improve transaction confirmation times and enhance user experience across the Ethereum network.

Monnot discussed the plan on June 21, targeting inclusion in the Glamsterdam update scheduled for late 2026.

“Shorter slot times make the confirmation service better, and so have the potential to raise the service price beyond where it is today,” he explained.

The “service price” refers to the economic value Ethereum captures as a settlement and confirmation layer.

By 2026, Ethereum is expected to have increased block gas limits and blob supply, enabling the network to handle higher throughput.

The proposal involves shortening three key subslot timings: block proposal time from four to three seconds, attestation time from four to 1.5 seconds, and aggregation time from four to 1.5 seconds, reducing the total slot time by six seconds.

Everstake, an Ethereum staking protocol, noted that faster slots would lead to quicker transaction inclusion, fresher wallet data, and smoother experiences across wallets, decentralised applications, and layer-2 networks.

Increased block production would also make transaction censorship more difficult by increasing the number of block producers per minute.

Monnot highlighted benefits for decentralised finance, including faster price updates on exchanges, reduced arbitrage losses, lower trading fees, and increased liquidity in automated market makers.

“Faster slots lead to more liquidity, which means lower trading fees for users and increased network effects for Ethereum,” he said.

However, the change could pose challenges for slower or poorly connected validators and increase bandwidth demands due to more frequent consensus messages.

Extensive testing will be required to prevent network instability and avoid breaking smart contracts.

The Glamsterdam update focuses on gas optimisations and protocol efficiency improvements to make Ethereum faster and cheaper to use.

EIP-7782 represents a significant step toward scaling Ethereum’s performance while maintaining network security.

At the time of reporting, the Ethereum (ETH) price was $2,426.87.
