Ethereum Foundation establishes $1.25 million legal defense fund to support Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm
Odaily Planet Daily reports that the Ethereum Foundation has announced it will provide up to $1.25 million in funding to support Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm’s legal defense, including $500,000 in direct aid and up to $750,000 in community matching donations. Roman Storm is scheduled to stand trial in U.S. federal court on July 14, facing charges of operating an unlicensed money transmission business, money laundering, and violating sanctions. The Foundation emphasized that “privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime,” framing this move as a key stance in support of open source and Web3 privacy freedoms. Previously, Vitalik Buterin donated 50 ETH to support Storm’s defense.
