Mercari to Accept Bitcoin Payments Through Subsidiary Melcoin in Japan
Mercari, one of Japan's largest e-commerce platforms, will start accepting Bitcoin payments through its cryptocurrency subsidiary, Melcoin, from June 2024. Melcoin will convert all Bitcoin payments into Japanese yen, and buyers will have the option to pay with BTC while vendors receive the equivalent amount in fiat currency. Despite not displaying prices in Bitcoin, customers will be able to select BTC as a payment method. Mercari's move signals a notable embrace of cryptocurrency within the Japanese e-commerce landscape, with industry observers dubbing it a new "gateway" for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency investors and traders.
