Apple announces the discontinuation of the Clips app

Apple seems to be phasing out Clips, as the app has been pulled from the App Store and the company has announced there will be no further updates.

According to a support article on Apple’s website, Clips became unavailable for new downloads on October 10. However, those who already have the app can keep using it on their current or earlier iOS and iPadOS devices. If needed, existing users are also able to re-download the app from their Apple account.

Since there won’t be any more updates, using Clips may become increasingly challenging over time. Apple recommends that users save their Clips videos (with or without effects) to their photo library, so they can continue to view and edit them in other applications.

First introduced in 2017, Clips was Apple’s attempt to compete with Snapchat and Instagram Stories. While it wasn’t a social platform itself, it let users combine photos and videos with music, filters, and emojis.

In the early days, Brian Heater from TechCrunch called Clips’ editing tools overly basic, but noted that the app gave Apple a way to highlight its hardware and software, while offering users an alternative to the then-popular social media platforms.

According to MacRumors, Apple did add new features to Clips after its release, but in recent years, updates have mostly addressed bugs.

On Reddit, Apple enthusiasts didn’t seem shocked by the announcement, with many saying they hadn’t used the app in years or weren’t familiar with it. Additionally, an app like Clips, which relies on real user-generated videos, may seem outdated compared to Sora, OpenAI’s AI-powered video tool that recently surpassed 1 million downloads.
